Obama's Timetable More Conservative Than Bush's

After all the hand wringing about how Obama would pursue "defeat" in Iraq, and withdrawal is tantamount to surrender, it appears that the Bush administration has crafted their own timeline with the Iraqi Government that speeds up Obama's planned 16 month draw down of US forces:

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told reporters Thursday of the draft proposal, but they offered few specifics. It envisions the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq's cities by June 30, 2009, according to Iraqi and American officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because the proposed deal's details have not been made public.

Zebari hinted at the proposal's possible complexity. "This agreement determines the principle provisions, requirements, to regulate the temporary presence and the time horizon, the mission of the U.S. forces," he said.

Obama said in a statement Friday he was glad the Bush administration "has finally shifted to accepting a timetable for the removal of our combat troops from Iraq." He noted the draft has yet to be finalized, and reserved "final judgment."

This is the big downside to attacks on John McCain's Wife's houses, in that it gives the media good reason to distract from an otherwise big policy coup for the "inexperienced" candidate.

This is the amazing thing. Nobody has even seen the agreement, that was "dead in the water" 2 weeks ago, and its a coup for Obama. Why don't you wait and see what the time table looks like before handing out accolades? Perhaps the time line isn't what you think it is. Perhaps everybodies rushing to spin this as following Obama's lead, because if it actually lays an ending to the war (which isn't a war), it robs Obama of one of his primary narritives. Hey its over, lets talk about something else. Who cares that you gave a speech about it, risking no real consequences. But I digress, lets wait and see what the agreement actually says. Oh yea maybe we could then celebrate the fact that it'll be bringing troops out of conflict, instead of trying to grab credit. How's that surge working by the way?

I can't win with you, can I? One minute I'm supposed to jump to conclusions and run around like the sky is falling (Russia), the next I'm supposed to wait until I get a signed copy of the deal in my mailbox.

Oh wells...maybe this story was false, in which case, my blogging about it will mean exactly nil. In terms of using it to Obama's advantage, this is a political blog, ergo, I write about political topics.

As for the surge, the increase of troops helped, nobody is denying that.

I'm sorry can you show me Barry's quote bout the effectiveness of the surge?

If you can't see the difference between the interpetation of events transpiring and speculation on what will be included in a document that has yet to be signed, maybe you ought to rethink this political blog thing. Oh yea...since Russia has no desire to occupy Georgia, when's the complete pullback taking place? Those papers were only signed a week ago, well the second set anyway.

Obama on the surge:

There is no doubt that the extraordinary work of our U.S. forces has contributed to a lessening of the violence, just as making sure that the Sadr militia stood down or the fact that the Sunni tribes decided to flip and work with us instead of with al-Qaeda - something that we hadn't anticipated happening.

As for commenting, I talk about what I see...I saw an article saying that the US and Iraqi Governments have signed an agreement for a timetable, and commented on it, if that turns out not to be the case, so be it. There are lots of news stories that are coming out of Georgia/Russia that turn out to be incorrect later on.

I just the quote from Barry. He said it on July 28th while I was on vacation. Touche.
So are the Russians leaving?

Beats me, I hear two conflicting news stories on NPR everyday. Looks like they might withdrawal back to a portion just outside of South Ossetia and Ahbkazia, according to the latest AP report.

Ultimately, its looking like the 1967 war, and Israel/Russia just took the West Bank/South Ossetia. But at least in this case, the Ossetians want to be a part of Russia.
