Youthful Indiscretions
Some teenagers (me) smoke a lot of pot when they are young, some do a little blow, others vote Republican; all are bad for you, but it appears that Eric Stansell, a Democratic candidate for the 52nd House seat, did the latter.
Yes, in 1992 Stansell voted in a Republican primary. I contacted Stansell to find out who he voted for...he couldn't really remember, but he imagines it was Bush I. However, "[at] any rate, anyone who knows me knows that I am a champion of the little guy, and I think that the Democratic Party is the party that strives to advocate for average Americans, ergo my membership in the party."
Personally, I was 10 years old in that election, and I think I was for Bush too, not sure why, but my parents were concerned that I was going to grow up to be a young Republican, and quickly got me into therapy.
Either way, I guess this is the latest salvo in the "who is a real Democrat" debate started by the folks at the Nashville Scene. I know plenty of Democrats, very active Democrats, who used to be Republicans and guess what, sometimes you are born with good sense, sometimes you've got to gain it through life experience...the important thing is that you've come to your senses.
In other news, the City Paper got a look at some early fundraising numbers, and it appears that once again Mike Stewart will have substantially outraised his opponent. One might wonder then, why the Stewart campaign would go on the offensive against Stansell? The answer: 'cause they can. If you recall in 2006, Bredesen vs. Bryson, it was a foregone conclusion that ol' Jim Bryson would be pummeled, but that didn't stop them from harrasing him at every campaign stop and debate...its just fun.

It seems obvious that you attack Stansell for something minor that the Post or you can run with to keep the attention off of the things posted at the Scene. I haven't noticed you discussing those other issues printed today. Must have worked.
First, what the hell are you talking about?
Second, how was this an attack on Stansell, I said there was nothing wrong with once being a Republican.
I should have made the "you" more clear. The "you" I was referencing was the Stewart campaign going negative about Stansell when he was in high school. Sorry if that wasn't clear in the post.
And when you are 18, can you really be a Democrat or a Republican?

Yes.
Just an FYI, in the Bredesen campaign, the Bredesen supporters went after Bryson only after Bryson came out with that stupid ad showing him a hundred feet tall and Bredesen standing in the palm of his hand. If you don't think that fired Bredesen up to go after Bryson, then you don't know the governor very well.
As for Stewart, the only reason I can think of that he is going after Stansell is that he knows he is in some trouble. Has Stewart used any of that war chest for a poll? The word on the street is that Stansell is outworking him and its not unheard of for the lesser funded candidate to win this type of race (I believe Odom won his first election to the House even though he was outspent four to one). I think Stewart knows he is in trouble.
I'd be really interested in knowing who 'anonymous' is. As a resident of Dist 52, I have heard nothing from Mr Stansell, but I have received 3 direct mail pieces from Mike Stewart's campaign, as well as notices of house parties and events (not only by e-mail but also snail mail). I have yet to hear anything from the Stansell campaign.
I'm just wondering what trouble 'anonymous' seems to think Mr Stewart is in. Everywhere I go there are Mike Stewart yard signs, yet I've only seen a grand total of 5 Stansell signs. Hmmm... wonder who's selling what here and not owning up to it.
And in the interest of full disclosure, I have a Mike Stewart yard sign and hosted an open house for him, however I am not involved in his campaign otherwise.
