The GOP's Black Friend
William Howard Hobbs has quite the interesting post regarding race in the race for the White House. First, he is ecstatic that only 40% of African Americans believe that John McCain would have policies that favor whites over blacks. Meanwhile, only about 17% of whites (Hobbs must've been polled) fear that Barack Obama's policies will favor those of African decent.
Then, W.H.H. goes onto suggest the only Black Republican congressman in generations should be McCain's potential VP pick.
There are a lot of great possible VP choices for McCain. Watts - a 50-year-old married father of five with five grandchildren - is one who could fire up conservative Republicans, keep black Republicans from bolting to Obama, attract conservative black Democrats, and neutralize the incessant whining from the Obama camp calling every criticism of Obama a racist attack. He might also bring in white Democrats like Bob Beidelman of York, Pa.
Setting aside the erroneous claim that Obama's campaign has charged racism (to my knowledge, nobody high up in the campaign has ever called anyone a racist), Republicans like Hobbs tend to disfavor "affirmative action," but what else would you call putting a former three term Congressman from Oklahoma, who left office 5 years ago, on the ticket as John McCain's running mate? Could you argue with a straight face that his race wasn't the biggest factor?
Now, some Republicans and a handful of bitter Democrats seem to think Obama was "chosen" based on his race, but even if he was, he was chosen by the majority of Democratic voters; not some VP selection committee.
As for Hobbs' suggestion that McCain pick Bob Beidelman, some random Democrat from Pennsylvania who was quoted as saying he doesn't like Obama's wife, I really hope the senior Senator from Arizona takes his advice.

I didn't suggest McCain pick Bob Biedelman. I noted that if he put Watts - a conservative star with a fine record of success and experience in and out of politics, and prodigious campgain stump talent - on the ticket, he would attract conservative Cemocrats like Biedelman.
You know, the kind of Democrats that Democrats called racists after they voted for Hillary Clinton in the primaries. They aren't racist. They just aren't ready to elect a super-liberal to the presidency, especially not one who is anti-gun, pro-gay marriage, pro-abortion, favors higher taxes, opposes increased domestic oil production, and was utterly and completely wrong about the surge.
Well, if its all about qualifications, why not Zach Wamp or Lamar Alexander? Why should he have to look to a former three term Congressman from Oklahoma when he has plenty of people in Tennessee and elsewhere who fit the bill.
Shouldn't the TNGOP spokesman be talking up his own Conservative leaders, instead of having to look elsewhere. Granted, they aren't black, but we know that Jindal or Watts' skin color has nothing to do with your advocacy of their candidacies...right?
Plenty of Dems urging voters to back Barack because of the historical chance to elect America's first black president.
Obama has less qualifications, less experience and less success on his resume than J.C. Watts.
Sean, you seem to impy that Watts doesn't have much experience by repeatedly referring to him as a "three-term congressman."
Two thoughts:
1. He could have won successive terms, as he was very popular, but he term-limited himself and kept his term-limit promise.
2. Even at six years in Congress, he has almost twice as much experience in Congress as Barack Obama, who has only been there since Jan. 2005 (and hasn't been there much at all during the last year of running for president).
And your party is going to spend the next three months saying that Barack Obama is not qualified to be President, and subtly arguing that he became the nominee because of his skin color. So why randomly pick a mediocre Congressman from Oklahoma as your running mate? Why not Tom Delay, he was pretty Conservative and had a long record of "accomplishment"?
Watts intimated that he might even vote for Obama and that he had never been approached by anyone at the McCain campaign. Anyone that would consider voting for Obama is no "conservative." Watts would provide comfort to some Christian conservatives but other than that he is very Republican as opposed to a principled conservative.
Sarah Palin would be my choice and then shortly after inauguration, McCain should go on permanent leave. He'll pick Romney for help in Michigan and out west, Crist will still deliver Florida and he needs Mitt's cash.
CB,
I think he'll pick Mitt, but the most he can give is 2,300 to McCain for the Primary, 25K to the RNC, and then a few checks here and there to the "Victory" funds setup to skirt public financing. Either way, McCain couldn't tap Romney's millions even if they were campaigning together.
Sean,
McCain is going to wait until Obama picks, and if it's not Hillary or another woman, then McCain will pick a woman.
Otherwise, I agree with you on the Romney pick.
PS--I emailed about a week ago and never heard back from you.
