Candidate List

Randy Neal over at TennViews did us a solid and created a really good list of candidates seeking State and Federal office. Nobody in the Davidson County Democratic delegation has a primary challenge, though Ben West and Gary Odom both have Republican challengers.

In addition, Tom Humphrey's handicaps the upcoming House and Senate races, and sees no trouble for Democrats in their primary. One "Democrat" of interest is Rosalind Kurita, who has broken with the Dems to elect Ron Ramsey as Lt. Governor and has been pushing to have the office of Secretary of State become a constitutionally elected position (think Katherine Harris and Ken Blackwell).

Humphrey's says that her opponent Tim Barnes is a "political novice," which may be somewhat true, though he did challenge Curtis Johnson (R-68) in last year's election and lost by 2,000 votes (55-45%), which isn't too bad of a loss for a novice Democrat in a politically conservative area.

To be sure it would be tough to beat Kurita, but perhaps a tough challenge will remind her what party she belongs to. In any case, in the unlikely circumstance that Barnes does win, it would be interesting to see if Sen. Kurita pulls a Lieberman (again) and runs as an Independent to make sure the Republican won.

You know I think she will eventually switch to the GOP no matter what happens in the primary. Once you start flirting with the other side Sean its hard to come back to where you started. Look at Mike Williams. Look at Senator Nolan Mettatal in Mississippi....last year he promised democrats as he was campaigning that he was very much a democrat at heart. But he switched to the GOP a few months ago even though the democrats won a numerical majority last November. Or what about Senator Tom Butler, who represents that district as you come out of Ardmore and head toward Athens on I-65. He swore up and down a few years ago that he was only voting with the GOP because he despised Senate President Lowell Barron but he has now promised Bob Riley that he will switch to the GOP as soon as the legislative session ends next month.

Did you see The Tennessean's storyabout this on Sunday?

This amused me, in light of the TN GOP's "Martin Luther King was a Republican" stuff last week:

"The one Middle Tennessee challenger who has a current federal committee, James Hart, who filed in the 8th District as a Republican, was kicked off the ballot Friday at the request of the state Republican Party. The GOP also removed Hart, who had $5,293 as of Jan. 1, two years ago because he opposes some races having children, according to news reports."

LOL. At least they kicked him off the ballot.
