Rob Briley Withdraws from Race

Adam Kleinheider reported earlier today that Rep. Rob Briley will not be running in the Democratic primary...from miles away, I think I could faintly hear the collective sigh from East Nashville Liberals, who were not very eager about the prospect of going against a guy they thought was one of the best Representatives prior to his "indiscretions".

I've heard rumors about prominent East Nashville politicos privately urging their friend to drop out...whether that happened, or Rob Briley just came to this conclusion on his own, I don't know.

Currently there are two announced candidates for the race, Eric Stansell and Mike Stewart, but don't count other prominent politicos eying this relatively safe seat. In an email to the press (and me), Eric Stansell thanks Rep. Briley for his service:

“I know from Representative Briley’s voting record and legislative accomplishments that he worked diligently to represent those living in our district. I hope and believe that Representative Briley will now be able to take the time to focus on his personal health and well-being, and, after some time, will once again be able to use his talents and abilities to serve the public in some capacity. I wish Representative Briley well in his future endeavors and thank him for his service and his positive achievements as our Representative.”

Update II:

Mike Stewart has thoughts on the matter too:

“I sincerely appreciate the incumbent’s dedication to our community, city, and our state over the years,” Stewart said. “And I look forward to having the opportunity to give my time and attention to the needs of the district.”

Stewart offers the district the ability to work well with both local and state governments as the city faces challenges in public education and public safety.

“We need an effective representative who can work with the mayor and governor to keep our neighborhoods moving forward,” Stewart said. “With the state taking a more active role in our public schools, we need an advocate who can ensure that the process serves the students and parents well.”
