3,000

3,000 immigrants who were unauthorized to be in the United States have been identified and processed for deportation due to the 287(g) program implemented a year ago, according to Amanda Maynord in the City Paper:

Hall is requesting help once again from the Legislature in placing a permanent federal immigration judge in Davidson County to expedite cases, reduce delays in court proceedings and reduce federal transportation costs.

Most illegal immigrants are currently processed in Memphis or Los Angeles, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

“The local system and the federal system would benefit if an immigration judge was assigned to Nashville,” Hall said in a statement Friday. “This is one issue that everyone involved can agree on including immigration advocates.”

While Hall originally predicted around 4,000 unauthorized immigrants would be detained in the first year, only 3,000 were identified as non-legal residents.

I'd be curious to see a follow up article on the impact this program is having on the Hispanic community in Nashville. Also, have any of the immigrants who were deported, shown back up in Nashville?

Yes, to answer one of your questions, there have been people deported, only to end up back here in nashville.
