Don't Write '08 Off Just Yet...
The Son of a former Governor (no, not that one) is mulling a run for US Senate in '08, this according to Ken Whitehouse.
"I have spoken with Mike and several other potential candidates," said Gray Sasser, chairman of the Tennessee Democratic Party, when contacted by NashvillePost.com. "Should Mike decide to run, he would be a terrific candidate for the U.S. Senate. I firmly believe that Sen. Alexander is beatable in 2008. Tennesseans, like the rest of America, are ready for a change and are disappointed that Sen. Alexander continues to back the failed policies of George Bush and Karl Rove, voting with the Bush administration more than 90 percent of the time."
Well, as great a guy Bob Tuke is...he doesn't really have a chance against Alexander in 2008. It would still be an extremely uphill battle for Mike McWherter to beat Lamar Alexander, but him jumping into the race will make it a heckuva lot more likely that the 2008 Senate Race in Tennessee will be competitive.
I think how competitive will come down to who the Presidential candidates are. If its Fred Thompson, I think you can kiss it off easily. But if Giuliani won, and perhaps Obama or Edwards (or Gore) were to be the Democratic nominee...I think you'd see a much more energized electorate on this side of the aisle, making just about anything possible.
It will be interesting to see what McWherter the Younger says in the coming weeks and months, and hopefully he'll be at Jackson Day (this Saturday if you still want to get tickets) to give a little insight into what he's all about.
